Revisitation of A Maths syllabus in anticipation of H2 Maths?

Hi Mr Koh,

Just like to know if I have a weak foundation in A Maths, is it advisable for me to offer H2 Maths in JC? And do I need to re-study what I already learnt in secondary school to properly cope with the JC Maths curricula?

Thx in advance! (:

I would still recommend you to pursue H2 Maths even if you possess a shaky foundation in A Maths. However, bear in mind that the first year of H2 Maths is highly critical since many heavyweight topics will be covered, so do make sure you are attentive in lectures/tutorials, and that you understand the concepts imparted thoroughly. Put in consistent effort to do your work and revision, and seek assistance the minute you feel you are starting to fall behind - because in numerous instances, I have seen students who come forward only when the troubles have stacked up considerably, thus becoming very painful for them to remedy the situation.

As for re-studying A Maths from scratch, I reckon that isn’t highly essential, although certain H2 Maths topics expand upon what was taught in secondary school. Thus, if you really wish to reinforce your concepts and bottomline, I would recommend you review the sections on partial fractions, differentiation and its applications (excluding the sub-topic surrounding displacement/velocity/acceleration ), integration and its applications, and memorize all the trigonometric identities (they are going to feature prominently in certain topics later on).

It is not my intention to frighten you, but H2 Maths is a rather huge leap from A Maths as it tests your ability to think critically and flexibly-if you had survived previously in A Maths by simply practicing your TYS and committing to memory specific question solving techniques, you will find such methods no longer work in your favour. So strive to learn H2 Maths holistically and you will derive greater enjoyment in the process.

Don't be fearful because of your past, look forward to the future and embrace the challenges with the strength of your heart and determination of the mind. I wish you all the best and good luck in your endeavours.

Best Regards,

Mr Koh
